Karastan California Style

Before moving from a rental house to their first American home, a young European family of four contacted Samuel Fleming Lewis and Stephen Kladder of San Francisco based Interior Design firm, INSTUDIO, for an informational interview.

The couple had recently purchased a luxury townhouse close to their computer-oriented jobs in California’s “Silicon Valley”. As soon as the new homeowners had their keys, Lewis & Kladder were measuring rooms and taking pictures to develop a design plan that matched how the family saw themselves living in their new place.

The new home equally balanced traditional and contemporary interior architecture, finishes and details. Traditional moldings and cabinetry were paired with contemporary cathedral ceilings, a stacked stone fireplace, and lighting that mixed both styles.

The open plan common spaces were large enough to accept an imaginative floor plan. The family likes to spend time together but without a family room, the overall design of the large living room needed to be durable enough for everyday use by two active kids and a dog, yet chic enough for the parents social gatherings.

Once the furniture plan was decided on, the design was true collaboration between the designers and their clients. Each selection of furniture and art was considered on the beauty, proportion and benefit of each piece. The furniture palette was contemporary and neutral including grays, beiges, black, silver and browns.

The family said they wanted color yet repeatedly returned to neutrals. Lewis & Kladder choose golden and orange tones for leather ottomans that would introduce color while serving both as tables and seating.

Then it came time to discuss flooring. Lewis & Kladder had used Karastan’s Metropolitan Carpet Collection before and knew that the contemporary weaves, patterns and sophisticated color palettes, along with the durability of the product, was exactly what the townhouse needed.

For a Saturday design meeting three beautiful color palettes were developed using Karastan’s Comfort Oasis carpet in Paradise, Coronado and Botanical colors. The living room’s straight lines and angles needed the oval and round shapes woven into the carpet to balance the overall design.

The family loved the custom, organic shape of the carpet in the space, and especially the idea of making a custom Karastan bound rug from broadloom carpet. The Saturday morning after, a ten foot long custom sofa was delivered. The family and designers then collaborated to sketch and cut out a full sized paper template, which was delivered to California Carpets, a Karastan retailer, to produce the custom Karastan bound carpet.

O&P LIVING FROM STAIRS ALL

Within weeks a, custom free form bound carpet graced the living room, adding a focal point combining color and pattern that anchors the room. The Comfort Oasis carpet in Paradise, part of the Karastan Metropolitan Collection, is perfect for this home.

The family loves living in their first home. The durable luxury of their custom Karastan bound carpet allows them worry free comfort, whether wrestling with the dog or sampling California’s local red wines.
