Fashion and Flooring: The Impact of New York Fashion Week

With New York Fashion Week upon us, we’re excited to see all the luxurious new spring styles from the most famous designers around the world. With models strutting down the runway this week, unveiling the spring’s most anticipated styles, it’s easy to see the impact that these creations have on flooring as well.

Here are the biggest trends we see making their way into flooring design:

The Color of Fall

Red has always been a popular color, but this season, it’s whites and creams that are stealing the show. Regal hues, like the creamy Sandstorm from the Worstead Elegance collection, is a perfect base for a monochromatically designed space or paired with a bright pastel.

Power in Plaid

As New York Fashion Week continues, a trend we expect to see is the re-emergence of plaid. The timeless style has the versatility to be dressed up or dressed down, depending on the rest of the out.  When it comes to flooring, designs like our Woolston Plaid follows along as one of this season’s hottest, most adaptable looks.

Mix and Match

One of our favorite styles on the rise this week is the mix-and-match look. Clothing designers are pairing sleek leather jackets with bright, tattered pants in gorgeous innovative designs. In flooring like Karastan’s Patina Multi rug, flooring designers are combining random clouds of color with a distressed rug appearance.

Gold is Good

For many, yellow isn’t the obvious color choice when choosing an outfit to wear or what flooring to purchase. This season, Stylecaster predicts that golden tones like saffron and goldenrod will bring the luxury of gold back to the forefront. Live like royalty and keep your room in style with luxurious comfort and a brilliant golden glow Karastan’s Modern Vision in Winter Wheat.

Flower Power

Florals are another trend on the rise. From Warhol inspired neon shades to simple vines dancing across the floor, flowers are taking over all corners of fashion. In flooring, floral patterns are a timeless trend that adds texture without overpowering the rest of the room.

fashion

(Glovenia)

Big and Bold

Flashy and extravagant styles are what we look forward to during fashion week. Bold statements like big boots, bright colors and layered designs will be seen at shows throughout the week. If your personality is bold, we recommend rich carpets with intricate layered designs to keep your home looking chic.

Wool Carpets: The Best Carpets for Allergies

If you’re one of the nearly 30% of adults or 40% of children in the U.S. who lives with allergies, you don’t need a doctor telling you how the war against allergens is an everyday, uphill battle. Allergens are everywhere around the house – embedded in fabric, airborne in dust and lying in wait on hard surfaces.

It’s impossible to rid your home entirely of these microscopic particles, but you can minimize dust, pet dander, mold, pollen and other annoying allergens in the air that trigger allergic reactions. Did you know that natural wool carpet is an effective tool in your anti-allergy arsenal?

A properly maintained wool carpet can improve indoor air quality and have a beneficial effect on your health.

There’s a common misperception that people with allergies should avoid carpet in the home. Actually, the opposite is true. Studies now suggest that a properly maintained wool carpet can have a beneficial effect on your health. Here’s how hypoallergenic carpeting works.

A wool carpet’s overlapping fibers form ridges that trap particles in the upper layer of the pile where they can be easily vacuumed away.

Hypoallergenic Wool Carpets

Indoor air purity – Acts as a passive air filter to trap dust, pollen and other particles. Wool carpets also absorb air pollutants and gases faster and better than other carpet fibers.

Non-irritating – Most wool fibers are too long and thick to be inhaled, so a wool carpet won’t irritate the respiratory system or cause allergic reactions.

Easy to keep clean – A wool carpet’s overlapping fibers form ridges that trap particles in the upper layer of the pile where they can be easily vacuumed away. In fact, regular vacuuming removes the food source of allergen-producing dust mites.

Best Carpet for Allergies

Wool from sheep raised in New Zealand is recognized as the highest quality in the world. Sheep farmers there are passionate about their animals and their lands, using sustainable practices to raise free-range sheep bred for wool that’s ideally suited for carpets and upholstery. New Zealand wool is also naturally white so it readily accepts dyes for beautifully vibrant colors and patterns. And wool has built-in resistance to crushing, so carpet fibers bounce back even after repeated wear. Add to that its natural tendency to resist soil and stains and you can understand why wool makes the best carpet for allergy sufferers.

Naturally white, New Zealand wool readily accepts dyes for beautifully vibrant colors and patterns.

Karastan chooses to use New Zealand wool over any other types because of its superior beauty and strength as well as hypoallergenic properties. When shopping for wool carpeting, also look for the “Wool: Clean Air Certification” label that assures a carpet that removes contaminants from the air and contributes to a healthier indoor environment. Karastan was the first to carry the Wool: Clean Air Certified label on all of its wool carpets and rugs.

Despite the itching, sneezing and watery eyes, people with allergies and sensitivities to dust and other particles can still enjoy the warmth and comfort of carpeting in their home.

Karastan Premier Designer Project: Chicago Retreat

We love it when Karastan Premier Designers share with us images from some of their gorgeous interiors. So when M. Grace Sielaff, Karastan Premier Designer and managing principal of M. Grace Designs, Inc. out of Chicago, sent us photos from one of her latest projects, we just knew we had to share it with our Live Beautifully readers!

Read on for our Q&A with Grace about this beautiful Chicago retreat, complete with Karastan’s luxury wool carpet.

Karastan: Where was this project?

Grace:  Chicago, IL

Karastan: What were you hired to do?

Grace: Our client is from Denver, Colorado. We were hired to design their two-bedroom unit condo in River North, Chicago. It is our client’s second home. They wanted a second home so they can visit their parents on the weekends.

Karastan: Sounds great! What was the look the client wanted? How were you able to translate their vision?

Grace: Our client wanted a transitional with a minimalist modern living space. From the client’s perspective, they wanted to leave it all to me to come up with ideas. So we created this space with touches of their favorite color and then translated their ideal look within the allocated budget.

Karastan: What was your approach to this project?

Grace: I listened to their needs, and then presented the ideas, color palette, and furnishings one room at a time. I’m passionate about the outcome because the client was so easy to work with.

Karastan: Why did you decide to use a Karastan carpet?

Grace: I’ve incorporated Karastan’s Woolston Plaid in Castle Wall because of its nice transitional modern look. It has a bold yet subtle pattern, and it’s the first thing you notice when you walk into the room.

Karastan: Why did you decide to cut and bind the rug as opposed to going wall to wall?

Grace: Our client wanted area rugs in all the room.

Karastan:  Tell us about this room – what’s the focal point? What look did you achieve?

Grace: We achieved a dramatic, minimal yet subtle living environment. The focal point is in the living room. Everything’s anchored with the space, including the art, the loveseat and the area rug.

Karastan: What was the client’s response to the bedroom?

Grace: The bedroom was a haven to them. They feel like it’s a home away from home. We ended up with a successful project because they were just a remarkable couple to work with.

Thanks, Grace for sharing your beautiful work with us, too!

Karastan’s Newest Rug Collections: Manifesto and Titanium

Earlier this year, Karastan unveiled two of our most luxurious rug collections yet, Manifesto and Titanium. View the styles of each collection on our website and be sure to take advantage of our Find a Retailer tool to find a store in your area. While these styles are expected to be in stock later this spring, they won’t last for long!

A Relic Reimagined

Earlier this month, Karastan boldly unveiled its limited edition Panel Kirman Granite rug design inside the Karastan showroom of Atlanta’s AmericasMart during the opening day of January’s International Area Rug Market. A reimagined creation of our most popular rug ever made, the illustrious Multi Panel Kirman, the limited edition rug has been recolored with the millennial buyer in mind.

While the original Multi Panel Kirman that debuted in 1937 featured 53 mesmerizing bold colors, the refreshed masterpiece offers a more muted palette of greys, creams, tans and bronze, accented by citron and French blue. With only 250 of these limited edition works of art in existence, each is sure to become a treasured collection piece.

Here’s a more in-depth look at the inspiration and creative process behind the recreation of the legendary Multi Panel Kirman, as told by Tracy Pruitt, Karastan’s Vice President of Design.

Highlights from the Fall One Room Challenge

One of our highlights for 2015 was our carpet sponsorship of the Fall One Room Challenge™, is a biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty designers are invited to take the challenge and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over the six weekly posts. Eight bloggers selected Karastan carpets to feature in their room makeover, and the results were absolutely gorgeous! Here are some of the highlights from their projects:

Vanessa_WinterCrescent-038-EditWEB-554x800

A PARISIAN BEDROOM

Vanessa Francis is an interior decorator living in a suburb of Toronto, Canada with her husband and teenage daughter. She chose to makeover her master bedroom into a little Parisian getaway. The end result was a pretty and serene room featuring a palette that was fairly neutral. The varying textures from linen, velvet, and wool from her Karastan Woolcraft Nouveau carpet in Metro Grey provided a unique element to her new bedroom sanctuary. The Alexanian Carpet and Flooring in Toronto did a great job serging Vanessa’s new area rug.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

An interior designer from Texas, Jennifer Beshears blogs at The Pink Pagoda. In her One Room Challenge project she showcased not one but two Karastan carpets. She chose to redo the entranceway of her friend Jane’s home, and the resulting stairwell is stunning. The herringbone pattern of Karastan’s Cobble Ridge in Driftwood is a beautiful neutral color for the home’s entryway.

Beneath the secretary desk is our Wool Crochet carpet in French Beige that was cut and bound to fit the entryway. The stripes in the rug are a nice contrast to the herringbone pattern of the stair runner. Clifton Carpet did an amazing job installing the stair runner!

FROM BEIGE TO BEAUTIFUL

Mallory is a fashion and décor blogger at Style Your Senses, a life and style blog for the modern millennial. For her master bedroom redo, Mallory swapped beige for a mostly neutral and soft color palette with lots of plays on texture. Our new Patola carpet in Almond Cream, cut and bound to fit beneath her bed, brightens up the entire bedroom.

WILD AND EXOTIC

You could spend hours scrolling through the pictures of Holly’s room makeover and you still won’t discover all of the hidden elements that puts the wow factor into this living room. The room is bright, bold and colorful with different textures and patterns, exotic artwork and accessories.

LOVELY LIVING ROOM/DINING ROOM

Arianna of Arianna Belle is an interior design blogger living in California who makes custom high-end decorative pillows. Her room redesign features large pieces that are neutral in color with purple and blue pillows, art and other accessories throughout the room. The Area Rug Factory in Ventura County cut and bound the rug, our new Patola carpet in Almond Cream, which is a beautifully fit to the room.

AT THE RANCH

Inspired by a photo of a black and white check room that looks like it is right at home in the English Countryside, our celebrity interior design blogger Kimberly Schlegel Whitman completely transformed the living room at her White Oaks Ranch. The room boasts mixed metallics, plenty of equine accents and artwork, and even a pair of retired polo mallets.

The foundation of the room features our Woolston Plaid cut and bound rug in Redefined Khaki; the print compliments the beautiful pattern on the drapery as well as the animal pattern textiles scattered throughout the room.

BLACK AND WHITE LIVING SPACE

Sherry is an interior designer living in Atlanta who blogs at Design Indulgence. For her One Room Challenge, she transformed the living room and dining room of her sister’s home mixing new furniture and accessories with various fabrics and textiles. The living room features our Woolston Plaid carpet in Shoreline, which provided a unique pattern that really complimented the space. From the light walls to the urbane bronze on the built-ins, this new living space boasts a beautiful black and white modern decor with a cozy feel.

Karastan’s Mystic Garden West Coast Reveal

Excitement is building as Karastan prepares to unveil the limited edition Mystic Garden area rug to the West Coast at this upcoming market, held at Las Vegas’s New World Market Center. While Mystic Garden first made its debut to the world in early July in Atlanta, anticipation for this week’s reveal remains just as high, with buyers flocking to Las Vegas to secure one of the 75 limited edition designs. A collector’s item since creation, the Mystic Garden design will be sealed in the Karastan vault once all 75 rugs have sold.

Tracy

Tracy Pruitt, Karastan’s Vice President of Design, credited nature as the inspiration behind the legendary limited edition’s design. “It’s stylized, but you can still make out what it is. The delicate draping branches are so elegant, along with the cypress trees and delicate flowers. They create a garden-like feel,” explained Pruitt.

Mystic_Garden

While Mystic Garden’s inspiration may have been born in nature, its natural, organic appearance also imparts distinctive Persian traits. “I love that about it,” said Pruitt. “There is a real return to the appreciation for Persian traditional patterns, which have been the foundation of Karastan since its inception. Our goal has always been to create current, relevant, heirloom-quality rugs that are representative of traditional heirloom rugs,” he stated.

Upping the ante even more, the rug’s debut made history as the first-ever use of silk in an Axminster rug. “The sparkle and shine of the silk gives the rug a mystical quality,” said Pruitt. “The neutral color palette is inspired by nature with its sage and evergreen hues, then the sapphire and amber tones punch it up. It’s neutral and dramatic at the same time, which is something that will speak to today’s decorators and consumers,” stated Pruitt.

The Mystic Garden area rug will be revealed to West Coast buyers Sunday evening, August 2, 2015, in the Karastan showroom of the New World Market Center.
